Secondary refrigerant system options for supermarket refrigeration.
Author(s) : HESSE U.
Summary
The effects which minimize the emissions of environmentally harmful refrigerants from leaks are the extreme reduction of the refrigerant charged to the system, 100% factory manufactured and tested systems, extreme reduction of components, joints and tubes as possible sources for leaks, and smaller, less leak-sensitive fluid/refrigerant heat exchanger (compared to air/refrigerant). Other advantages are the reduction of costs for refrigerants and the possibility to use flammable or other hazardous refrigerants such as ammonia. The basic secondary refrigerant system uses a brine or other one-phase liquid fluid. The secondary refrigerant is circulated by a pump, cooled by passing through the evaporator of the refrigeration machine, and warmed by absorption of thermal energy in the secondary heat exchanger.
