Secondary refrigerants for indirect refrigeration and heat pump systems.

Author(s) : GRANRYD E., MELINDER Å.

Summary

Secondary refrigerants may be used more frequently as substitutes for CFCs are sought. The authors compare nine aqueous solutions and nine non-aqueous fluids to determine optimum thermodynamic properties. The characteristics concerned are volume flow for a given heat capacity, the heat transfer coefficient, and pumping power required. Environmental problems, corrosion and price were not considered. For temperatures above freezing, water is undoubtably best. Below freezing, aqueous solutions are better than other fluids, calcium chloride brine, potassium carbonate, methyl alcohol and ethylene glycol being preferred for temperatures above -15 deg C. For low temperature applications, it is difficult to nominate any suitable fluids. D.W.H.
