Summary

Current-voltage characteristics of two superconducting wires for alternating-current use in direct-current magnetic fields up to 1 T were measured with direct-current transport current as well as with sinusoidal alternating-current transport current at frequencies up to 50 hertz. Voltage signals due to the self-field effect were obtained and analysed. The measured self-field voltage is also compared with that obtained from calculations based on the critical state model. The self-field losses were estimated by numerical integration of the measured self-field voltage multiplied by instantaneous transport current.
