Summary

Pressure from nongovernmental organizations has led to the acceleration research. Various prototypes with HFC alternatives operate and were represented in Brussels. Among the most astonishing, we must quote the revival of the Stirling cycle or thermoacoustic refrigeration. Obviously, solutions using hydrocarbons are also present. But they represent only one part of the solution, for small equipment, since the load must be limited in order to avoid the risk of explosion. Also present is carbon dioxide, which seems to have the most promising prospects, being industrialized for small capacities. This technology has many assets on an environmental level, but proves to be a true technological challenge, with a question: will it be a relevant solution on the energy level? The first elements resulting from tests are encouraging. Research and development continues.
