Summary

IN THE NETHERLANDS A RESEARCH PROGRAM HAS BEEN CARRIED OUT INTO THE POSSIBILITIES FOR ENERGY SAVING AT OUTDOOR-AND INDOOR SKATING RINKS. THE STUDY REVEALED THAT SUBSTANTIAL ENERGY SAVINGS COULD BE REACHED BY THE FOLLOWING MEASURES: REDUCTION OF WIND-VELOCITY ON OUTDOOR SKATING RINKS ; INSULATION OF THE UNDERSIDE OF SKATING RINKS ON PILES ; RAISING OF THE ICE-SURFACE TEMPERATURE ; REDUCTION OF THE ICE-THICKNESS ; AND REDUCTION OF HEAT RADIATION FROM THE CEILING AND WALLS TO THE ICE-SURFACE IN ICE-HOCKEY HALLS.
