Summary
FUNDAMENTAL PRINCIPLES ON HOW TO IMPROVE THE PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS OF HEAT EXCHANGERS ARE DESCRIBED. TECHNIQUES OF HEAT TRANSFER ENHANCEMENT ARE CLASSIFIED INTO TWO GROUPS: THINNING OF THE THERMAL BOUNDARY LAYER AND DISPLACEMENT OF THE FLUID LAYER NEAR THE HEAT TRANSFER SURFACE. SOME EXAMPLES OF THE METHODS UTILIZED RECENTLY FOR OBTAINING HIGH-PERFORMANCE HEAT TRANSFER SURFACES ARE INTRODUCED FOR THE CASES OF A SINGLE-PHASE FORCED CONVECTION, CONDENSATION AND BOILING. FUTURE TRENDS IN THE RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT OF HEAT EXCHANGER TECHNOLOGY ARE MENTIONED BRIEFLY.
