Solar air conditioning of buildings.

Summary

Regarding the predicted climate change scenarios, the energy use for heating in continental Europe will slightly decrease, while the energy use for building air-conditioning facilities will considerably increase (up to four times). In Slovenia, electricity grid maximum load increase between 2002 and 2004 was more than 100 MW with peak load at the 13th hour. This article presents the software tool SOLAIRcad intended for the analysis of the performance and the efficiency of different desiccant solar cooling systems and also enables comparative efficiency analyses of solar and free cooling techniques. For individual system components, multiple parametric models were developed based on mathematical models of heat and mass transfer as well as experiments in order to determine fresh and return air parameters. As a case study, analysis of solar cooling system performance is shown for cities with different climatic conditions and a comparison with free cooling is made.
