Spermatogenic evaluation, cryogenic preservation and fertility of the "pacu", Piaractus mesopotamicus (Holmberg, 1887), sperm, from induced spawning.

[In Portuguese. / En portugais.]

Summary

In order to develop artificial reproduction in commercial freshwater fish, the seminal characteristics, cryogenic preservation and fertility of "pacu" sperm were studied. The sperm was frozen in liquid nitrogen vapour and the cryogenic preservation was carried out in special container. After 24 hours of freezing, the sperm was thawed and under microscopy examination showed 20% live spermatozoa. After one year of cryopreservation, the fertilization test revealed 21.07% of fertilized eggs, whereas for the control fresh semen the fertility was 34.55%. Therefore, sperm cryopreservation of the "pacu" and its utilization in the artificial reproduction routine is feasible.
