STARTING OF REFRIGERATION COMPRESSORS.

Summary

TWO METHODS OF STARTING 3-PHASE INDUCTION MOTORS ARE COMPARED. IN THE TRADITIONAL EUROPEAN STAR-DELTA METHOD, THE STARTING CURRENT AND STARTING TORQUE ARE 33 AND 35% OF THEIR FULL LOAD VALUES AND THE RUN UP TO SPEED IS BALANCED AND SMOOTH. IN NORTH AMERICA, A PART-WINDING START IS SOMETIMES USED, IN WHICH ABOUT HALF OF THE WINDINGS ARE ENERGISED A SHORT PERIOD BEFORE THE REST. THE RESULT IS A LARGER STARTING TORQUE, BUT AT UP TO 65% OF FULL CURRENT AND THE RUN UP IS INCLINED TO BE NOISY WITH VIBRATION. AS BOTH METHODS ARE REASONABLY SIMPLE AND NEITHER WILL GIVE SUFFICIENT TORQUE TO START A COMPRESSOR ON FULL GAS PUMPING LOAD, THE AUTHOR RECOMMENDS STAR-DELTA SHOULD ALWAYS BE USED. D.W.H.
