Summary

TRIALS WERE CARRIED OUT ON THE CABBAGE VARIETIES WINTER GIANT AND MICHIHLI, STORAGE CONDITIONS BEING MAINTAINED AT 273 K (0 DEG C) AND 95% RH. THE CABBAGE HEADS WERE STORED IN THREE DIFFERENT MODES IN ORDINARY MARKET CRATES: UNWRAPPED, WRAPPED IN POLYETHYLENE AIRTIGHT BAGS AND PERFORATED BAGS. WINTER GIANT KEPT WELL FOR 50 DAYS, REGARDLESS OF THE MODE OF PACKAGING. WEIGHT LOSSES WERE AS FOLLOWS: 8% WITH UNWRAPPED HEADS, 0.2% WITH HEADS PLACED IN AIRTIGHT BAGS AND 1.2% WITH THOSE IN PERFORATED BAGS. MICHIHLI WILL KEEP WELL FOR 55 DAYS IF THEY ARE WRAPPED. WEIGHT LOSSES ARE: 1% WITH AIRTIGHT BAGS AND 3% WITH PERFORATED BAGS. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE STORAGE DURATION, FOR BOTH VARIETIES, SHOULD NOT EXCEED 80 DAYS IN ORDER TO MAINTAIN GOOD MARKET QUALITY.
