Stratification study of horizontally partitioned thermal energy storage tank in a solar powered air-conditioning system.

Summary

Horizontally partitioned thermal energy storage is particularly useful to assist large scale solar powered air conditioning system, due to the possibility to be installed in the basement of buildings, which is not possible for the traditional vertical partitioned thermal stratification tanks. The energy storage is very important for solar powered air conditioner keep working under various weather conditions, in order to improve the stored energy efficiency, a new idea based on the three-partitioned structure within the tank is proposed, comparisons of experimental test with numerical simulation are performed on stratification performance under different operation conditions, such as flow rate, initial temperature in charge or discharge process. It is found that the thermal inhibition effect caused by the finite space with the isolation plates plays an important role in mixing suppression and thermal partition. Advantages of the partitioned storage are shown from the analysis on the conception of exergy and enthalpy.
