Thermal stratification effect on the performance of a solar DHW system.

Summary

In this paper, specific energy analysis of a domestic hot water (DHW) system has been carried out including the stratification effect in the water storage tank. For better realization of the thermal stratification, a special built-in heat exchanger was developed. The measurements were evaluated, focusing on the extra energy income yielded from thermal stratification. The ratio of extra energy of the stratified tank compared to the total mixed storage one was 17.3%. Special emphasis was also given to the influence of the initial layer temperature and loads on the daily performance of the solar system. It is obvious that a regular hot water load supports efficient working of the solar system to a great extent. Finally, in order to identify the optimal load values the specific solar energy produced by the collector was studied as a function of the specific load energy.
