Summary

Frost formation on a cooling coil in a specific application will vary due to many random factors such as, door openings, variable loads, ambient humidity, etc. Time controlled defrosting is therefore usually set for the worst case, making it energy inefficient for much of the time. To improve the situation research has been done on the effect of frost on air coolers. First by modelling the results and confirming the models by test, then by using the modelling technique to simulate different defrost time cycles to observe the energy lost. These studies enabled the researchers to establish the temperatures which can be measured in a frosted evaporator for comparison with those which would pertain in a clean evaporator. A microprocessor controller was then devised to make both measurement and comparison to control variable defrosting cycles as required. D.W.H.
