Summary

P-V diagram is important basis for the compressor fault diagnosis. However, it is very difficult to install a pressure sensor into the cylinder wall because of the limited space and decreasing of the cylinder strength. Therefore an F-V diagram monitoring method based on the piston force is proposed for the fault diagnosis. The piston force and the piston movements are measured, and the measured piston force is decompound into a comprehensive gas force, inertia force and friction forces. The relation between the comprehensive gas force and the volume of the cylinder is shown in the new F-V diagram. This diagram could be easily obtained without any structure improvements on the compressor. Furthermore, almost all type compressor faults, including the valve problem, piston ring fault, and even the piston rod fault, could be reflected in the F-V diagram. This method is expected to replace the P-V diagram for fault diagnosis.
