Summary

A practical design method on chain-like connected closed-type thermal storage tanks with capacities of 120 m3, was clarified as follows: 1) the combination of two perforated plates are installed at the top and the bottom of every storage tank as a rectifier to obtain uniform velocity distribution. Pressure drop at each perforated plate sets the same value as dynamic pressure of the upper stream. The rectifier indicates very high performance of uniformity; 2) the amount of the mixing volume in the storage tank is found using the behaviour of temperature response of the tank with a stepwise change of inlet; 3) the Archimedean number is kept larger than 0.5 to get the mixing volume down to less than 10% of the tank volume. A 0.1 number gives the minimum tank wall volume, which is most economical point.
