Summary

Manufacturers of widely distributed chilled food are increasingly sub-contracting their logistic operations, including transport, storage and distribution. Distribution centres require heavy investment and sharing of systems makes it possible to bring different flows together and to improve logistic performance. However, some distributors and manufacturers have retained in-house logistics, either because their logistics are efficient, or because the high volumes that they do handle are spread over a large range of products that reduces the effect of mass.
