Summary
Pulsing Leucadendron "Silvan Red" stems with sucrose solutions of 200 g/l (20%) or higher for 24 hours at 1 deg C prevented leaf desiccation during 42 days dry storage at 1 deg C. Stems pulsed with sucrose for 24 hours at 20 deg C absorbed more sucrose, but leaf desiccation was significantly higher. Sorbitol and mannitol pulses also accelerated leaf desiccation, suggesting that the inhibition of leaf desiccation by sucrose was not a result of improved leaf hydration. Total soluble sugar content in leaf tissue declined during storage; this decline was significantly inhibited by a more or equivalent than 20% pre-storage sucrose pulse. A 24-hour pulse with sucrose indicated that sucrose was distributed primarily to the leaves. It is possible that exogenous sucrose prevented leaf desiccation in Leucadendron by maintaining membrane integrity.
