Summary

In this work an experimental campaign involving a standard transcritical R744 system (i.e. with vapour by-pass valve) and two transcritical R744 systems using the pulse-width modulation (PWM) ejector (with and without overfed evaporator) was conducted. Firstly, the summer performance of the aforementioned solutions was assessed in six European locations, i.e. Oslo (Norway), Paris (France), Lisbon (Portugal), Madrid (Spain), Seville (Spain) and Athens (Greece). It was found that the PWM ejector coupled with the overfed evaporator leads to increases in summer average coefficient of performance (COPsummer avg) from 3.0 % (in Oslo) to 6.7 % (in Athens) compared to the standard system. Finally, five hot locations, i.e. Miami (USA), Bangkok (Thailand), New Delhi (India), Phoenix (USA), Riyadh (Saudi Arabia), were also included. The PWM ejector combined with the overfed evaporator was observed to increase the COPsummer avg by from 7.3 % (in Miami) to 13.1 % (in Riyadh).
