SUPERCONDUCTING SUPER COLLIDER: A STEP IN THE 21ST CENTURY.

Author(s) : MCASHAN M.

Summary

THE DEVELOPMENT OF SUPERCONDUCTORS AND THAT OF HELIUM-TEMPERATURE REFRIGERATION TECHNOLOGY HAVE BOTH BEEN PROPELLED BY THEIR WIDE APPLICATION IN LARGE-SCALE SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH (TEVATRON, MAGNETIC RESONANCE). IN THE NINETIES, A NUMBER OF LARGE INSTRUMENTS WILL BE CONSTRUCTED. THE LARGEST OF THESE PROJECTS IS THE SUPERCONDUCTING SUPER COLLIDER (SSC) NOW UNDER CONSTRUCTION NEAR DALLAS, TX, USA. AN INTRODUCTION TO THE PURPOSE AND THE TECHNOLOGY OF THE SSC IS PRESENTED WITH EMPHASIS ON THE CRYOGENIC REFRIGERATION SYSTEMS INVOLVED. THE PRESENT STATE OF CRYOGENIC TECHNOLOGY AND TRENDS IN ITS DEVELOPMENT WILL BE DISCUSSED.
