Superheat measurement and its importance.

Summary

Accurate temperature measurement of pipeline contents is often difficult. The author suggests that to check pipe surface temperature in the field it is necessary to use a good contact, small sensor instrument, such as a thermocouple. Even then, pipe surface must be cleaned and insulation applied. For efficient plant operation it is essential to check refrigerant superheat at expansion valve bulb, at compressor suction and discharge, and also liquid subcooling at condenser outlet and expansion valve inlet. Practical tips are given, also some guidance figures for expected temperatures. D.W.H.
