Supported vacuum-insulations – new possibilities for cryogenics.

Number: pap. n. 42

Author(s) : KERSPE J. H.

Summary

Different types of evacuated heat insulations are known since the beginning of the 20th century. In this paper two main categories will be shown and named in the following way: a) high vacuum insulations – such as dewars and multilayer insulations (MLI) – which work at vacuum conditions below 10-4 mbar; b) supported vacuum insulations (GVI-systems), working already at moderate vacuum in a range of 0.1 up to 10 mbar. The theory and characteristics of GVI-systems will be shown and also be compared with the characteristics of MLIs. With reference to this comparison, new possible solutions and applications with GVI-systems will be shown.
