Summary

This is the first part of the series of papers dealing with technical and economic aspects of application of carbon dioxide and ammonia in cascade cooling systems on the basis of the exemplary industrial system. The design and operating parameters of R744 subcritical and transcritical systems have been described in this part of the paper. The review of the following cooling systems operating with natural fluids has been discussed: cascade system with carbon dioxide at low-temperature part, indirect system with carbon dioxide as heat transfer fluid and several evaporation temperature system. The advantages and disadvantages of these systems have been discussed. The second part of the paper deals with technical and thermal characteristics of the system as well as the choice of the thermodynamic cycle among ten proposed configurations.
