Technical and safety aspects of ammonia detection and detectors.

Summary

Ammonia detection systems are part of the possible safety measures in refrigerating systems with ammonia as refrigerant. Several principles have been investigated, comparing their advantages and disadvantages. Proposals have been developed for Dutch guidelines for safe use of ammonia as refrigerant. In these guidelines, ammonia detection with two alarm levels is mentioned: for alarming purposes (detection limit 200 parts per million) to give persons the opportunity to go to a safe place and to start proper actions for minimizing (future) adverse consequences; at a high alarm level (limit 800 parts per million) mechanical ventilation, emergency shut down systems, isolation valves or ammonia destruction systems are activated, if applicable.
