Temperature based CO2 system cooling capacity control.

Author(s) : MANOLE D.

Summary

A concern with using CO2 as a refrigerant are the high operating pressures. These high operating pressures turn out to be less of a technical problem that it appeared at first glance. This study analyses a more subtle difficulty that does not emerge in CO2 refrigeration cycle energy efficiency analysis or even during calorimetric testing. The difficulty consists in adjusting the CO2 refrigerant mass flow rate according to the required cooling load capacity. The cooling capacity in a CO2 system is controlled by adjusting the gas cooler pressure. This study investigates a method to control the CO2 refrigeration system at operating parameters for optimal performances. A test stand was built to validate the experimental results.
