Temperature uniformity in a low-pressure freight container utilizing glycol-chilled walls.

Type of article: Article, IJR article

Summary

Tests are reported on a Dormavac hypobaric refrigerated container of 12.2 m ISO dimensions carrying a full load of 695 lamb carcasses. The container was pumped down to ~ 0.006 atm with inner wall temperatures of ~ -1.5°C. The carcasses were examined after 30 and 40 days and showed a mean weight loss of 2.5% which was not significantly increased for the longer period. The importance of pre-cooling the produce and container before loading was demonstrated; also that humidification should be delayed until the load has achieved the storage temperature.
