Summary

COLD STORAGE AT A PRESSURE CONSIDERABLY LOWER THAN ATMOSPHERIC (UP TO 2.7 KILOPASCALS) PROVIDES LONGER STORAGE PERIODS FOR FOODSTUFF IN COMPARISON TO TRADITIONAL SYSTEMS. THE COST AND LEVEL OF TECHNOLOGICAL SOPHISTICATION REQUIRED BY SUCH A SOLUTION LEAD ONE TO USE ADVANCED TECHNIQUES IN CONTROLLING TEMPERATURE, RELATIVE HUMIDITY AND AIR RENEWAL. IN THIS PAPER THE MAIN TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF A CONTAINER DESIGNED FOR HYPOBARIC OPERATION ARE PRESENTED. THE RESULTS OF TESTS CARRIED OUT TO DETERMINE THE PERFORMANCE OF THIS CONTAINER, IN TERMS OF STORAGE TIME AND PRODUCT QUALITY (FRUIT AND VEGETABLES, MEAT AND ALSO PLANT SCIONS) ARE ALSO REPORTED. E.
