Term and prospects for long term storage of teleost ova and embryos.
Author(s) : LUBZENS E., PEKARSKY I., MAGNUS Y., AR A.
Summary
The anticipated market demand for significantly larger quantities of cultured teleost species requires the development of efficient techniques for their production. A direct contribution to this goal, from using low temperatures to store gametes and embryos, has long been recognized. Two main categories for viable storage of biological material are known: at above water freezing temperatures where biological activity is greatly reduced or at cryogenic temperatures at which no biological activity takes place. More informations are given on recent advances in research. While production of fish from cryopreserved spermatozoa is economically possible and justified today, a pressing need requires the formation of new concepts and procedures for successful future exploitation of these techniques for preservation of ova and embryos. The methods developed for captive species are the key to successful preservation of yolk-laden eggs from endangered wild populations.
