Test of an open reciprocating compressor operating as low-stage compressor in a R744/R717 cascade system.
Author(s) : BRAENDGAARD T.
Summary
The refrigerant R744 (CO2) is easy to handle and is neither inflammable nor toxic (its sanitary value is approx. 5000 parts per million). CO2 is a natural substance which is inexpensive and easy to procure. The substance has no impact on the ozone layer (ODP= 0) and its impact on the global warming/greenhouse effect is very low (GWP= 1). Compared to the tests results of other refrigerants high isentropic and volumetric efficiencies are obtained with R744 at low temperature operation. This is due to the very high discharge pressure at low saturation temperatures and low pressure ratio. Oils of the ester type can be applied with R744. The advantage of ester oils is the miscibility with R744. If no miscibility is required, other types of refrigerator oils can be applied, both mineral and synthetic oils.
