Commercial refrigeration with ammonia and CO2 as working fluids.

Author(s) : EGGEN G.

Summary

The author presents different concepts for commercial refrigerating systems using ammonia as working fluid and CO2 as a secondary fluid or working fluid. CO2 is regarded a very promising secondary fluid for low temperature (freezing) applications, e.g. in combination with two-stage ammonia systems. CO2 is also a viable option in a cascade ammonia/CO2 plant. Moreover, when commercial high-pressure compressors are developed, CO2 can be used as the only working fluid. The latter systems will attain a higher energy efficiency than that of conventional direct expansion systems and two-stage ammonia plants using CO2 as a secondary fluid.
