Energy saving potential of controlled refrigerant pumps in CO2/R404A-cascade systems.

Summary

In this paper, results from a field test of a prototype refrigerant pump in a CO2/R404A-cascade system are presented. Possibilities for energy optimisation of the system in the magnitude of 8% by improving the pump energy efficiency and the use of variable speed for pump capacity control are documented. Further potentials for obtaining energy savings as a result of the new pump design and method for capacity control are discussed. The critical issues (phase separation, bubble formation, and cavitation) relevant to the safe and efficient use of refrigerant pumps in combination with CO2 are identified and discussed. The future use of pumps in commercial and industrial refrigeration systems is briefly described.
