Tests and simulations of diffusion of various hydrocarbons in rooms from air-conditioners and refrigerators.

Author(s) : CLODIC D., CAI W.

Summary

The use of flammable refrigerants depends on safety regulations and standards. Safety standards take into account the lower flammability limit in % volume/volume and admit implicitly that the dilution of the flammable refrigerant in the room is homogeneous. Tests and simulations that were performed on various leak rates of propane or isobutane show that concentration is not always homogeneous. These gases heavier than air concentrate preferably down the ground especially when convection is natural. A test method and its results are presented in the paper as well as the first simulation results obtained with Fluent, a CFD (computational fluid dynamics).
