Summary
A large US research facility required the remodelling of its water-chilling plant comprising a scattered mixture of 30-year old installations, many using CFCs. A special project team was established, totally self managed and without interference from the company administration. After analysing the load and existing distribution pipework, the team went through a series of disciplined methodological approaches to reach an optimum of performance and economy. The result is a 14,000 ton water chilling plant combining steam absorption and R22 vapour compression. Control is by a central management system. D.W.H.
