THE AUTHOR POINTS OUT THAT MOST REFRIGERANT COMPRESSOR FAILURES OCCUR SHORTLY AFTER INSTALLATION AND ARE CAUSED BY FAULTY SYSTEM DESIGN. THE PAPER MAINLY CONCERNS GOOD SYSTEM PRACTICE AND COVERS DESIGN POINTS IN LOAD CALCULATIONS, CONTROL, REFRIGERANT CHOICE, AND INSTALLATION. MANY FAILURES ARE ATTRIBUTED TO INCREASED DISCHARGE TEMPERATURE. A SPECIFIC EXAMPLE OF A SMALL ABATTOIR PLANT IS USED TO ILLUSTRATE DESIGN AND SELECTION PROCEDURES AND PROBLEMS. D.W.H.
