Summary
Introduced in 1991, this Arcticar boxcar is designed to meet the requirements of shippers in the frozen food industry. It uses carbon dioxide rather than a diesel-driven compressor to keep products at a consistent sub-zero temperature for up to 15 days. The cryogenic railcar can carry 6850 ft3 of frozen food products. Unlike mechanical refrigerator cars, the Arcticar boxcar has no moving parts, so it requires less maintenance and repair and subsequent downtime.
