Summary

This paper deals with the design and implementation of a system delivering 17 MW (4834 refrigeration tons) of nominal cooling at Impala Platinum No.14 shaft in Rustenburg, North West Province, South Africa. A description of the installation is given, as well as a discussion of the design criteria, control and safety issues. South Africa has developed high standards for ammonia refrigeration plants used in mines, which is partially dealt with in the paper.
