The design of plate heat exchangers for refrigerants.

Author(s) : KUMAR H.

Type of article: Periodical article

Summary

The author discusses three designs of plate heat exchanger, all having embossed plates with narrow flow channels. One type is of stainless steel plates copper brazed together under vacuum, another is of separate plates of any suitable material assembled with gaskets, and the third is of pairs of welded plates containing the refrigerant assembled with gaskets to allow cleaning on the cooled or heated fluid side. The first is limited to about 200 kilowatt capacity and cannot stand high thermal stress. The others can be larger and more versatile. All, when used as refrigerant condensers or evaporators have heat transfer coefficients enhanced by 2 to 6 times those for shell and tube units, but design pressures are limited to 2700 to 3000 kilopascals. They are smaller than equivalent shell and tube units and may be cheaper even when made of stainless steel. D.W.H.
