Summary

FOR TEMPERATURES AT AND ABOVE 0 DEG C, CONVENTIONAL REFRIGERANTS SUCH AS HALOCARBONS AND AMMONIA CAN BE REPLACED BY PURE WATER IN A VACUUM PROCESS. THIS BECOMES ESPECIALLY IMPORTANT FOR WATER-COOLING OR ICE-MAKING, AS THE WATER FROM THE PROCESS ITSELF SERVES AS A REFRIGERANT. VACUUM-EQUIPMENT SUCH AS LARGE CENTRIFUGAL WATER-VAPOUR COMPRESSORS WITH HIGH VOLUMETRIC FLOW AND PRESSURE-RATIO ARE NEEDED FOR THIS CYCLE. DIRECT-CONTACT EVAPORATORS AND CONDENSERS WITH SUPERIOR HEAT TRANSFER EFFICIENCIES CAN BE USED AND MAKE HEAT EXCHANGERS OBSOLETE. FOR TYPICAL APPLICATIONS SUCH AS WATER-COOLING, ICE MAKING, INDUSTRIAL COOLING AND HEAT PUMP OPERATION, THE PERFORMANCE DATA ARE PRESENTED.
