The effect of a non-uniform surface heat transfer coefficient on the overall local heat transfer coefficient of a heat exchanger.

Author(s) : HESSELGREAVES J. E.

Summary

Non-uniform heat transfer coefficients around the periphery of many surfaces used in heat exchangers give rise to errors in total heat flow if an average side coefficient is used for the overall heat transfer coefficient. A theoretical approach is developed in the paper to evaluate the errors in term of exchanger parameters. Two cases of non-uniformity are examined to illustrate the theory. Typical values of error are about 5%. Not surprisingly, the error is greater the larger the degree of non-uniformity is. Small variations are caused by the ratio of side coefficients and wall to side coefficient.
