The effect of prolonged exposures at low temperatures in insects.

Summary

A review of the literature reveals that most authors consider the time aspect as an important factor in insect cold hardiness. Some insects are chill intolerant, while others become chill tolerant, during hardening. Studies on exposure at low temperatures fall into three categories: 1) non-freezing mortality in freeze intolerant insects; 2) influence of time nucleation in freeze intolerant species; and 3) prolonged exposure in freeze tolerant insects. Further studies, including physiological aspects, are needed to understand the importance of prolonged exposures at low temperatures in insect cold hardiness.
