Summary

An application of computational fluid dynamics to the investigation of thermal comfort inside buildings. A numerical code on the market is used to solve the equations governing the air motion and the heat transfer inside a room, without considering any radiation exchange, for the sake of simplification; this code is based on the finite element technique and uses the kinetic energy of turbulence-turbulence dissipation rate method for modelling turbulence. Four cases are investigated, each different in its heating system: heating panel on the floor, heating panel on the ceiling, finned coil, and radiator. For each case, the fields of velocity and temperature inside the room are presented, together with the local values of predicted percentage of dissatisfaction index, evaluated according to the Fanger theory.
