Summary

IMMEDIATELY AFTER COLLECTION, THE SEMEN OF THE WHITE BROAD-BREASTED TURKEY WAS COOLED TO 278K (5 DEG C) AT THE RATE OF 8, 20, 40, 68, 88, 100, 124 AND 140 K PER MIN. IT WAS DILUTED AT THE RATIO OF 1: 4 WITH A CRYOPRESERVATION DILUENT CONTAINING ETHYLENE GLYCOL (8%). IT WAS FROZEN IN LIQUID NITROGEN VAPOURS FOR 3 MIN BEFORE STORAGE AT 77 K (-196 DEG C). PERCENTAGE OF LIVE SPERMATOZOA AND PERCENTAGE OF MORPHOLOGICALLY NORMAL SPERMATOZOA WERE EVALUATED AFTER THAWING. THE COOLING RATES OF 8 AND 20 K PER MIN WERE THE MOST EFFECTIVE.
