THE AIM OF THE PAPER IS TO ILLUSTRATE THE ENERGY AND THERMAL COMFORT ADVANTAGES OF SHADING THE WINDOWS OF BUILDINGS ; FOR EXAMPLE WITH PRECAST CONCRETE SHADES. SPECIAL GLASS TYPES ARE NOT AS EFFECTIVE AS BUILDING DESIGNERS HAVE BEEN LED TO BELIEVE. A COMPUTER ENERGY CASE STUDY OF AN AIR CONDITIONED BUILDING IS PRESENTED. THERMAL COMFORT ACHIEVED IN NATURALLY VENTILATED HOSPITAL WARDS IS COMPARED TO BUILDING COSTS.
