In 1997, consumption per capita (with the exception of poultry and ice cream) was evaluated as being 20.7 kg, this being close to the European average and equivalent to German, Belgian and Dutch consumption levels, but far lower than Scandinavian consumption levels and well above Italian consumption levels (10.1 kg per capita).
