Summary

Description of a project for the evaluation of substitutes for R502. Selection of R407A for the following reasons: possibility of use at low and medium temperatures, also in retrofitting; high COP; low TEWI (total equivalent warming impact). The project objectives are to demonstrate such relative advantages of R407A. The authors describe the plant of an Italian supermarket and its retrofitting. The tests showed that the retrofit was neither complicated nor expensive and the performance of the system remained virtually the same as before. The operation will be extended to other supermarkets. In a second step, the project will evaluate the energy consumption and TEWI with a R407A/coolant system, in comparison with ammonia/coolant system.
