Evaluation of HFE125 as an R502 replacement in supermarket low temperature refrigeration.

Summary

One alternative being considered as an R502 replacement in low temperature refrigeration is an ethane-based hydrofluoroether, HFE125, and blends of this chemical with other compounds. HFE125 has properties which make it desirable for low temperature refrigeration; its performance can be nearly equal to that of R502. An important factor in the initial consideration of HFE125 was its low atmospheric lifetime. This property made it a potentially more promising long-term replacement than the industry blends. However, recently obtained data indicate that earlier measurements of atmospheric lifetime were incorrect and that the chemical may have a significantly longer lifetime to make it unacceptable as an R502 replacement. The paper describes testing of HFE125 in a compressor calorimeter under supermarket operating conditions using a simple refrigeration cycle.
