THERE IS AT PRESENT A WIDE DIVERGENCE OF OPINION EXTENDING FROM THE CONCLUSIONS OF A RECENT US NATIONAL ACADEMY OF SCIENCE REPORT (NAS, 1979) TO THOSE OF A US DEPARTMENT OF THE ENVIRONMENT REPORT (DOE, 1979). ATTENTION IS ALSO GIVEN TO REPORTS BY THE US FEDERAL AVIATION ADMINISTRATION (FAA, 1979) AND THE UNITED NATIONS ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAM (UNEP, 1979 AND 1981). THE AREAS OF AGREEMENT ARE NOTED AND THE REASONS BEHIND THE ABOVE DISAGREEMENT ARE EXPLORED. A BRIEF CONSIDERATION IS GIVEN TO CURRENT RECOMMENDATIONS FOR CONTINUED RESEARCH. (INT. PACKAG.
