Summary

THE AUTHOR BRIEFLY REVIEWS THE MEASUREMENTS CARRIED OUT IN 1988-1989 OF THE OZONE CONTENT IN THE STRATOSPHERE AT THE NORTH POLE. IT WAS FOUND THAT THE PROBLEM IS MUCH MORE COMPLEX AT THE NORTH POLE THAN AT THE SOUTH POLE. THERE EXIST SEVERAL OZONE MINIHOLES, WHOSE FORMATION MECHANISMS ARE THOUGHT TO CALL FORTH VARIOUS REACTIONS, SUCH AS THE CREATION OF ICE, DUST AND SULPHUR OXIDES, WHICH OCCUR AT VERY LOW TEMPERATURES: BELOW 188 K (-85 DEG C), AT AN ALTITUDE OF 20-25 KM. THE CAUSES OF THESE PHENOMENA GO FAR BEYOND CFC EMISSIONS, TO OTHER HUMAN INDUSTRIAL ACTIVITIES. THE STUDY IS PARTICULARLY DIFFICULT AND THE PROBLEM ESPECIALLY WORRYING.
