The industrial heat pump market.

Summary

Industrial applications present many opportunities where heat pump technology can offer benefits. Apart from saving energy, industrial heat pumps (IHPs) may give benefits which range from an improved product quality to compliance with environmental regulations that would otherwise be difficult to achieve. It has been estimated that roughly 7,000 IHPs are in operation today, for a wide variety of applications. These include the provision of process heating and cooling, and of space conditioning or tapwater heating in industrial premises. Heat pumps may also be used to upgrade industrial waste heat for use in district heating networks. The market potential for IHPs is significant, and is highlighted in the paper for Canada, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, the United Kingdom and the US. In conclusion it is noted that for industrial plant managers, saving energy costs is seldom the only incentive for investing in new technology. And if IHPs are to attract the investments needed to come anywhere near the charted potential, IHPs must be considered not only for their energy value, but as reliably and economically viable components with many other benefits.
