Summary
Spain is the second largest consumer of fish and seafood in Europe (second only to Denmark), with a level of 28 kg/inhabitant/year (average consumption in Europe: about 15 kg/inhabitant/year). However, since the beginning of the 1980s, consumption has dropped quite markedly: -9% over the 1993-1997 period. Home consumption of fish and seafood dropped 11%, but consumption rose 7% in the HORECA sector and almost 4% in the community sector.
