THE AUTHOR GIVES A GENERAL REVIEW OF THE CHINESE RAILWAY NETWORK, WITH AN OVERALL LENGTH OF 53,000 KM. ELECTRIFICATION HAS BEGUN. FOR HAULAGE DIESEL ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVES HAVE BEEN USED SINCE 1958 AND PROVIDE 17.6% OF PRESENT TRAFFIC. EFFORTS ARE BEING MADE IN ORDER TO DEVELOP GAS-TURBINE AND ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVES. FREIGHT WAS 1,160 MILLION T IN 1983, AMOUNTING TO 43% OF THE OVERALL CARGO ; THE TONNAGE OF FRESH PRODUCTS WAS 10 MILLION T ; REFRIGERATED TRANSPORT INVOLVES ABOUT 20% OF THIS TONNAGE. THE MAIN TYPE OF RAILWAY TRUCK IS A REFRIGERATED TRUCK WITH WATER ICE.
